Is a 4 Island Krabi Trip Worth the Conservation Fee?

Worth it for beach lovers and sandbar seekers

The 400 THB conservation fee covers access to four limestone islands and the iconic Talay Waek sandbar that connects Koh Tup and Koh Mor during low tide. Most 4 island krabi tours bundle boat transfers with this fee, delivering you to Phra Nang Cave Beach, Chicken Island's coral gardens, and Poda Island's powdery shores in a single day. The real value lies in witnessing the sandbar phenomenon—a natural land bridge that emerges twice daily, letting you walk between islands through ankle-deep turquoise water. Snorkeling gear is typically included, giving access to shallow reefs around Chicken Island without additional rental costs. The fee funds marine conservation and waste management across Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. For photographers and couples seeking that postcard-perfect Thai island scene, the fee pays for itself in the first hour. Budget travelers splitting costs across a longtail boat group will find better value than those booking private speedboat 4 island krabi tickets.

What makes it worth it

  • Talay Waek sandbar walk is genuinely unique
  • Four distinct beaches in one trip
  • Snorkel gear usually included with boat packages
  • Conservation fee supports marine park protection
  • Phra Nang Cave Beach ranks among Krabi's best

Keep in mind

  • Crowds peak between 11:00–14:00 daily
  • Short stop time at each island
  • Weather-dependent sandbar visibility
  • No shade on sandbar crossing

Bottom line: Pay the fee if the sandbar experience and multi-beach access justify a half-day investment for your Krabi trip.

What you'll see

What you'll see at 4 Island Krabi

Koh Poda

The largest of the four islands features a long stretch of white sand and iconic limestone scenery. It serves as the primary location for beach relaxation during a 4 island krabi visit.

Koh Kai

Known for its distinct rock formation resembling a chicken head, this landmark is a highlight for boat photography. It provides excellent shallow-water viewing opportunities.

Koh Tup

This island is famous for the Talay Waek, a natural sandbar that emerges at low tide to connect the islands. It remains one of the most visited natural features in the region.

Koh Mor

Often visited alongside Koh Tup, this tiny island offers quiet spots for snorkeling in crystal-clear water. Its proximity makes it a seamless stop during island hopping trips.

Limestone Cliffs

The dramatic karst formations surround the archipelago and define the landscape. These structures have been sculpted by wind and waves over millions of years.

The experience

What visiting 4 Island Krabi is really like

You board a longtail at Ao Nang's eastern pier at 08:15, the engine's two-stroke idle audible across the beach. The boat clears the breakwater and turns southeast, passing the limestone cliffs of Railay in 12 minutes. Chicken Island appears first, its rooster-head silhouette sharper as you approach from the west.

Read more Show less

The captain cuts the engine 30 meters offshore; you slip into water that is 78 degrees Fahrenheit and four meters deep, finning over brain coral colonies and parrotfish grazing on algae-covered rock.

At 09:40 the boat reaches Tup Island, where the sandbar is already exposed, a pale ridge connecting two forested outcrops. You walk its 300-meter length, the sand packed firm underfoot, warm water lapping both sides. Hermit crabs cluster near the tideline; small jellyfish drift in the shallows. By 10:30 the sandbar is crowded—15 longtails anchored offshore, 180 visitors photographing the split.

Phra Nang Cave Beach is the third stop. You wade ashore through knee-deep water, the cave mouth visible beneath the overhang, wooden offerings stacked inside on a stone ledge. The sand is finer here, white rather than beige. You snorkel the reef's eastern edge, where visibility drops to 10 meters and sergeant majors school around a submerged rock pinnacle. At 13:00 the boat returns to Ao Nang, the cliffs backlit, the engine throttle steady across flat water.

Explore 4 Island Krabi by Longtail Boat

The 4 island krabi tour connects Phra Nang Cave Beach, Tup Island, Chicken Island, and Poda Island by traditional longtail boat, departing from Ao Nang. Snorkeling gear, life jackets, and a Thai-style lunch are provided on most 4 island krabi tours. The route passes limestone karsts, coral reefs, and the seasonal sandbar linking Tup and Mor Islands.

The four islands scattered between Ao Nang and Railay form a 12-kilometer arc of karst geology that rose from the Andaman seabed roughly 260 million years ago. Phra Nang Cave Beach anchors the western edge, where a limestone overhang shelters a shrine visited by fishing crews since the 19th century.

Chicken Island, named for its rock profile resembling a rooster's head, marks the eastern boundary, its silhouette visible from the mainland on clear mornings. Between them lie Tup Island and Poda Island, connected at low tide by a 300-meter sandbar that emerges twice daily.

The 4 island krabi circuit became a formal tourism route in the mid-1990s, when longtail operators from Ao Nang began running scheduled departures to the sandbar phenomenon. Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park absorbed all four sites in 1983, establishing a 400-baht conservation fee collected on arrival. The marine park designation protects 87 coral species and the seagrass beds that support green turtles during nesting season, April through October. Visibility averages 15 meters November through March, dropping to 8 meters during monsoon months when phytoplankton blooms cloud nearshore waters.

Most 4 island krabi tours depart Ao Nang's eastern pier between 08:00 and 09:30, following a clockwise itinerary that prioritizes the sandbar window. Longtail boats carry 10 passengers and require 45 minutes to reach Chicken Island; speedboats seat 15 and complete the crossing in 20 minutes. Tup Island's sandbar is submerged from two hours before high tide until two hours after, limiting access to a four-hour window that shifts 50 minutes later each day. Tour operators consult tide tables published by the Thai Navy Hydrographic Department, adjusting departure times to align snorkeling stops with sandbar exposure.

Phra Nang's cave shelters a collection of wooden phalluses left as offerings to the spirit Mae Nang, believed to grant fertility and safe passage. The beach's sand is crushed coral and shell, finer than Railay's coarser limestone fragments. Poda Island's crescent beach faces west, its gradient steep enough that kayaks must be pulled 15 meters inland to avoid the tidal swing. The islands receive 2,800 visitors daily during high season, concentrated in the 10:00–14:00 window when 40 boats converge at the sandbar.

The sandbar emerges twice daily for four hours, its access window shifting 50 minutes later each day with the lunar cycle.

Dress code

Visitors should wear swimwear and lightweight clothing suitable for tropical conditions. A cover-up is required when transiting through areas near the park entrance.

Bags & security

Keep belongings in waterproof dry bags during boat transfers. Large suitcases are not recommended for 4 island krabi excursions due to limited space on long-tail boats.

Photography

Marine parks allow personal photography of the limestone cliffs and beaches. Use protective gear to shield cameras from salt spray and humidity.

Families & strollers

Children are welcome on 4 island krabi trips, but life vests must be worn at all times during transit. The shallow water at Koh Poda is generally suitable for young swimmers.

Accessibility

Sandbar access is dependent on tidal levels and involves boarding small boats. Mobility assistance is limited in this remote marine environment.

Food & drink

Most 4 island krabi tour operators provide lunch and drinking water. Visitors are prohibited from bringing food that generates excessive litter.

Planning Your 4 Island Krabi Visit Duration and Timing

Recommended time

Half a day

A well-planned 4 island krabi excursion typically requires a half-day commitment to explore the limestone cliffs and shallow lagoons. Visitors often find that booking professional 4 island krabi tours helps navigate the maritime traffic near the sandbars during peak tide shifts. Since heavy vessel congestion often occurs after midday, securing your 4 island krabi tickets early ensures you experience the marine park with fewer crowds.

Perfect island hopping day

We booked a 4 island krabi tour through our hotel and it exceeded expectations. The sandbar at Tup Island appeared right as we arrived at low tide, and we had nearly an hour to walk between the islands. Snorkeling near Chicken Island revealed healthy coral and plenty of tropical fish. Our guide timed each stop perfectly to avoid the larger tour groups.

Clear water and great snorkeling

The Andaman Sea around these islands is remarkably clear. We saw parrotfish, angelfish, and even a small reef shark during our snorkel stop. Phra Nang Cave Beach was the highlight, with its towering cliffs and hidden lagoon. The longtail boat ride between islands took about ten minutes each and the captain provided dry bags for our phones.

Well organized tour

Our 4 island krabi tour departed Ao Nang at 8:30 and returned around 4 pm. Lunch was served on Poda Island under the shade of casuarina trees, simple Thai dishes but freshly prepared. The limestone karsts are even more impressive up close than in photos. Water shoes are essential for the coral areas.

Good but crowded

The islands themselves are beautiful and the snorkeling spots had decent visibility. However, by mid-morning at least fifteen other longtail boats arrived at the same beaches. We should have chosen the early departure option. Chicken Island's rock formation is quirky and makes for good photos. The sandbar connecting Tup and Mor islands is worth the trip alone.

Highlight of our Krabi trip

Stunning natural scenery throughout the 4 island krabi tours. Phra Nang Beach feels almost untouched despite the daily visitors. The cave shrine at the beach is an interesting cultural element. Our guide explained the local fishing traditions and pointed out sea eagles nesting on the cliffs. Water temperature was perfect in late May.

Excellent snorkeling conditions

We visited during the shoulder season and had calm seas with visibility exceeding fifteen meters. The coral gardens near Poda Island are recovering well and we saw numerous species of reef fish. The tour included all snorkel gear and a basic underwater camera for group photos. Pack reef-safe sunscreen as the sun is intense even on cloudy days.

Beautiful limestone landscapes

The four islands each have distinct character. Chicken Island is mostly for photos and snorkeling offshore, while Poda has the best beach for relaxing. Tup Island's sandbar only appears for a few hours around low tide so timing matters. Our 4 island krabi tickets included lunch, snorkel equipment, and national park fees.

Great for families

We brought our two kids aged seven and ten and they loved every stop. The water is shallow enough at most beaches for younger children to wade safely. Snorkeling at Chicken Island kept them entertained for nearly an hour. The longtail boat ride is smooth in good weather and the open design means no one got seasick.

Nice but rushed

The islands are undeniably scenic but we only spent about thirty minutes at each location before moving on. More time at Phra Nang Beach would have been appreciated as there are caves to explore and better swimming areas. The tour felt like a checklist rather than a relaxed day. That said, the karst formations and water clarity are remarkable.

Unforgettable scenery

Every stop on the 4 island krabi tour offered postcard views. We visited in July during the green season and had brief rain showers that cleared quickly, leaving dramatic cloud formations over the limestone cliffs. The snorkeling equipment was well maintained and life jackets were provided for weaker swimmers. Highly recommend booking directly with a local operator at Ao Nang beach.
